Ask These Questions Before You Resell Anyone’s Mailboxes

Sales calls are slippery. A friendly rep shows you a slick dashboard, talks about “seamless experiences,” and you hang up with nothing but a warm feeling. Warm feelings don’t pay invoices. Think of a used car. You wouldn’t skip the test drive.

Who actually sees the login page? Can two clients ever collide? Where do all the domains live? What does the margin look like? What happens when it breaks? How do I leave, if I must? Time to try one FAQs

So walk in with questions. Good ones. Here are the six I’d ask any provider before putting my name on their service.

Who actually sees the login page?

Start here, because clients see it every day. Whose logo is on it? Whose web address sits in the browser bar? If the answer is “the provider’s,” your clients will never connect the service with you.

White label email for MSP setups fix this. Your branding goes on the login page, and the provider stays out of view. Ask whether the web address can be yours too. Ask to see a live example, not a screenshot. Screenshots lie.

Can two clients ever collide?

This one makes salespeople fidget. Ask it anyway. Can staff at one company ever see another company’s mailboxes, even by accident?

The right answer is a flat no. Each client should live in a separate space with its own login and its own users. If the rep starts hedging, write that down. Privacy slips are the sort of problem that ends contracts.

Where do all the domains live?

Now ask to see the admin side. Not the pretty overview. The actual screen you’d use on a busy Friday.

Can you see every client’s domain in a single list? Can you add a domain without filing a ticket? Can you create a mailbox in about a minute? Ask the rep to do it live while you watch. A tool that works in a demo will usually work on a Friday. A tool that stumbles in a demo won’t improve. Count the clicks, too. Five is fine. Fifteen is a warning.

What does the margin look like?

Here’s the money question. Under an  email reseller program, you pay a wholesale rate and charge clients your own price. The gap is yours.

Dig into the structure. Is it priced per mailbox or per domain? Are there minimums? Do storage and sending limits change what you pay? Are there fees for branding the login page? Get answers in writing. A cheap headline rate can hide expensive extras. Run the numbers for ten clients with five mailboxes each. That’s fifty mailboxes. Does the margin still look good once limits and fees are in?

What happens when it breaks?

Sooner or later, it will. A client’s mail stops at 6 pm on a Thursday, and they’ll call you, not the provider.

So ask who answers on your side. What hours? Phone, chat, email? How fast? And ask how the provider handles deliverability, because mail that lands in spam is a support call waiting to happen. Also ask what happens during an outage. Do you hear about it from them, or from your clients? Better yet, test it yourself. Send messages to Gmail and Outlook, check the spam folder, and confirm SPF, DKIM and DMARC records.

How do I leave, if I must?

Nobody asks this on a first call. Everyone wishes they had later.

Can you export a client’s mail? Can you copy it to another provider over IMAP? How long does that take? A provider confident in its service won’t mind the question. One that dodges it is telling you something. Write the answer into your own client contract, too.

Time to try one

TrekMail is built for agencies, MSPs, and hosting providers who want to give every client branded webmail and their own login, with all their domains managed from one place. Take your list of questions to a trial, set up one friendly client, and see how each answer holds up in real use.

FAQs

Should I compare more than one provider?

Yes. Two or three is plenty. Ask each the same questions and compare the answers, not the sales pitch.

Is price the main thing to compare?

It matters, but limits, support, and ease of use often matter more. A cheap plan that eats your time isn’t cheap.

Should I ask for a demo?

Always. Ask them to add a domain and create a mailbox while you watch. It tells you more than any brochure.

Can I test delivery myself?

Yes. Send test mail to Gmail and Outlook addresses and check the spam folder. It takes ten minutes.

What’s a red flag on a sales call?

Vague answers about separation between clients, hidden fees, or any reluctance to explain how you can export mail later.
